Claus Nielsen’s guestblog from LA Poker Classic

It was a cold windy night in the desert. A ruggedly handsome Danish immigrant loaded up his mule and headed west. After a 3½ hour ride on his trusted mule he arrived at a place called Commerce Casino. He looked around and realized why people used the term ‘The Wild West’ to describe this Godforsaken place.
Back to reality. My name is Claus Nielsen and I hope that you find the blog interesting and informative. During the next couple of months I will periodically write stories from the poker scene in Las Vegas. Ironically, this first edition is from my trip to the L.A. Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino near downtown Los Angeles. The trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles is ca. 280 miles (450 Kilometers/ 45 svenska Mil) and will take about 4 hours and more if you get caught in the L.A. Traffic. For those of you that have never taken this trip, it is 200 miles of driving through the middle of nowhere. Kind of interesting the first time, but incredible boring when you have done the trip more than 50 times.
I arrived at the Commerce Casino at 8:30 at Tuesday night, February 14th (what a way to spend Valentines Day, alone in the car and nothing but love songs on the radio). For those of you that have never been to Commerce, here is a brief description of the place. With well over 100 tables (and up to 243 during the tournament weeks) this is the biggest live poker room in the world. The acoustics are surprisingly good, in that it is not as noisy as you would think.
The players! For those of you that play online and are good at taking player notes, might already have figured out that L.A. (California players in general) players are NUTS. They are some of the most aggressive players in the world and they chase everything. They will call 4 bets with a gut shot and throw the cards at the dealer when they don’t hit it as well as use extreme profanities towards the dealers, who are mostly Asian and speaks limited English, so they just nod back thinking it was a compliment. Sometimes when you sit at a table there is so much action and so many chips flying that you think people watching the game are throwing chips in the pot.
I like that. The only problem is that you have to be aware that you will experience some monster bad-beats and just let them happen. Do NOT get caught up in the action and start playing like they do. Stay calm and watch the show. Many a solid rock have been to Commerce, started winning and then getting caught up in the action and before you know it found standing at the cage and requesting a credit card advance.
At the Commerce Casino, the rake is 20-25% higher than in Vegas, but you get to eat for free. The restaurants at the Commerce are not that good, but the menu from which you can order food at the table while playing, is pretty good and you can order almost anything. I was hungry, so to get some food I sat down to play a little $10-20 No Limit. I just bought in for $1,000. The first 10 minutes I picked up queens twice, they held up in smaller pots and I was up $1,000. I ran into an old golfing friend of mine Lance Allred, who asked if I wanted to go out for something to eat. I figured the $1,000 was a good night’s work, so I picked up and went to dinner. The good part about a place like Commerce is that people don’t get mad when you do a hit-and-run. There are long waiting lists, so the seat will quickly get filled with another fish!
The next day Wed. Feb 15 was Mega Satellite day. At 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. they had $1020 satellites for the main event. I am normally quite successful in these events (5 seats in 14-16 tries). This was not to be one of the successful attempts. I lost a coin flip in the first one and never got any cards or draws to hold up in the second. In between I picked up another $1,000 in the $10-20 No Limit cash game. During the day most of
