Have you gone on a downswing that crushed your bankroll, forcing you to move down in stakes? Odds are, you did it wrong. Moving down long before you “have to” can earn you a LOT of extra money. My hope is that these 6 reasons combined will change your perspective entirely.
1) Moving down reduces your exposure when you're likely off of your A-Game.
2) Moving down serves as an insurance policy against you overestimating your edge in your current games.
If you're an underdog and don't know it, moving down routinely prevents you from hemorrhaging a ton of EV.
This is especially true given point #1.
3) Winrates aren’t linear.
If your A-Game winrate is:
5bb/100 at 1k NL
7.5bb/100 at 500nl
…they don’t get reduced proportionally when off your game.
More likely, your C-Game winrates look something like:
1bb/100 at 1k NL
4bb/100 at 500nl
Double the hourly if you move down!
4) Whether you admit it to yourself or not, the magnitude of financial risk will likely impact your mindset and play.
Reducing risk leads to better play.
5) Higher winrates in smaller games, due to points #3 and #4, mean a much shorter average time to turning things around, which means:
A much shorter average time til you return to your A-Game!!
Returning to your A-Game sooner means more EV.
(Not to mention happiness & sanity!)
6) More likely wins, less stress, and higher EV play leads to more time at the tables.
If you’re still losing in bigger games, you may need a number of days off, and/or plenty of short sessions.
These compound:
Less Pressure + Higher Winrate -> Quicker Wins -> Better Play -> Even HIGHER Winrate -> More Hours Played @ Higher Winrate = $$$$
Stop thinking of moving down as risk-reducing.
Think of it as profit-enhancing (w/ a side of less risk).
Move down & go get ‘em
