Svensk "skandale"

#1| 0

Pete

As the online poker players are awaiting the consequences of the new legislation, the Swedish poker scene are eagerly watching what appears to be a huge scandal unfold.

The main character in ”Ken-gate” is Ken Lennaárd. He is by far our most well known poker player. He is (was?) the chairman of the Swedish Poker Player Association, the spokes person of the government owned poker site, the poker columnist in the biggest newspaper in Scandinavia and the play by play announcer on the, if not the biggest but at least the best poker show here in Sweden.

His side kick in this mess is ....*pause for effect*... Russ Georgiev.

Yep, that´s right, Russ G, the tool from RGP.

It all started when Russ published this post on RGP this spring. He also posted numerous emails that he claimed was sent to him by Lennard.

The whole story is just to long to tell here but the (alleged) basic plot is that in 2003 Ken organized a private game in his family's hotel. He invited Martin DeKnijff, Christer Johansson (former winner EPT Paris) and Erik Sagström (Erik123) to play and told them that the game also would include an American billionaire that was a huge fish.

Ken and Russ then rigged a room in Ken's family's hotel in Stockholm. They set up cameras to see the hole cards and the hired dealer was a card mechanic. The plan was to cheat the three invited players.

The scam fell apart when Lennaárd was unable to get Sagstrom, DeKnijff and Johansson to the hotel. They where busy playing in another high limit game at a card club and did not want to leave that game.

There is a lot more details to this story, if you are interested I suggest you search the RGP forum.

It should be stated that Ken Lennaárd so far is denying the allegations. He has made two statements where he admits contact with Russ and where he says he was an idiot to even listen to this well known cheat. But that was as far as it went according to Lennaárd.

Both statements have been heavily criticized, they are intentionally very vague in language and never goes into details regarding what has happened.

It is an ”official secret” that the three supposed victims have confirmed their side of the story. The only one to do so in public however is Erik Sagström. He says that Ken called them numerous times the night in question and that some of the details in Georgiev's posts could not be known to someone that was not deeply involved. He also says that once the scam was made public by Russ G, Lennaárd contacted the players and confessed. There was an agreement made that Ken Lennaárd would write an official statement where he confessed and that he then would leave the Swedish poker scene for a long time. According to Sagström, Lennaárd later changed his mind and told the ”victims” that the deal was off and that he instead would deny all allegations and go on with his business as usual.

This story is far from over yet, and I am sure that some details will change as we get to know more about what really happened.
